The Lure of the Local

Field 36 2014

The Lure of the Local is a site specific investigation into anxiety of place and trauma with the local environment.

The precursor for the exhibition began at local nature reserve called Newell’s Paddock, 6km west of Melbourne. Bishop spent over a year exploring and engaging with the local landscape, studying the area, its geological, historical, psychogeographical, ecological and social role with the local community.

In The Lure of the Local a place is recreated and an intimate atmosphere formed, from darkness, the smell of damp soil, weed matting, grass, refuse and field recordings that permeate the senses. In The Lure of the Local Bishop invokes a moment in time for the viewer to share, wonder, fear and explore.
